Editorial: Sweet Home Alabama

A fact and an opinion are two different matters. A fact is that Alabama recently legalized same-sex marriage after Judge Callie Granade voted over Chief Justice Roy More, according to Bloomberg. A rather controversial opinion would be whether to allow same-sex marriage or not in the state where the skies are so blue.

Judge Callie Granade, in this blogger's opinion, made a very brave decision to legalize same-sex marriage. The statistics below confirm that Alabama is one of the lowest-ranking states when it comes to marriage support, making Judge Granade's nullification rather controversial. (image source: Public Religion )

The graph below with the red-pink colored states, courtesy of Huffington Post , confirms evidence of a high Christian population in states like Alabama. This was NOT meant to attack said religion, but brings up the fact that many anti-gay marriage states have a high Christian population. A common Christian stereotype is being homophobic and quoting the Bible. But, homophobia CAN be expressed by anybody, religious or not.

In my honest opinion, same-sex marriage should be legalized throughout the United States. The majority of the States may be heterosexual, but that doesn't mean marriage should be limited to one man and one woman. As many of us know, the United States is not a religion-based government, so whether one identifies as Muslim, Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, or non-religious, their beliefs should not control our republic government. Another factor is the Bill of Rights should guarantee equal rights for all, including the right for someone who is LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) to marry one of the same sex.
