Kurt Cobain Honored with New Statue in WA

It smells like teen spirit in Aberdeen, Washington! Just last week, according to NME, the hometown of Nirvana guitarist Kurt Cobain unveiled a statue of the deceased frontman. In addition to the statue, February 20 has been proclaimed "Kurt Cobain Day" to pay homage to the grunge icon.

But, what is grunge? In the early 90s, grunge was a popular genre of rock music. With influences of hard rock and punk, grunge displayed a loud, hard sound, with strong drums and loud guitar chords. Nirvana was, and still is, the most recognized of the grunge bands, with Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam close behind.

Kurt Cobain was a very famous icon of the music movement. Many mysteries surrounded him, like his death on April 5, 1994. Lots of people claim that Kurt Cobain committed suicide; however, others hold with the theory that his wife, Courtney Love, murdered him. Another mystery of his death is dying at the age of 27, the same as many other rock musicians. The "27 Club’s" most famous members are Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin. What qualifies a person to be in the 27 Club is to be a famous musician and, no doubt, die at 27.

But no matter the circumstances, Kurt Cobain is still recognized famously, with a statue and holiday to commemorate him.
